Strangles is an infectious, contagious
disease of Equidae characterized by abscessation of the lymphoid tissue of the upper
respiratory tract. The causative organism, Streptococcus equi equi, is a gram-positive,
B-hemolytic group C cocci which is an obligate parasite and pathogen. It is
highly contagious and produces high morbidity in susceptible populations.
Transmission occurs via fomites and direct contact with infectious exudates.
Diagnosis is confirmed by bacterial cutlure of exudates from abscesses or nasal
swab samples, however, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) which detects the presence
of S. equi DNA is an alternative to culture identification. The immune respone
to the major virulence factor of S. equi, the SeM protein, can be measured by (ELISA).
